Life of Christ

Jesus of Nazareth (1977) VHS (Three Volume boxed set)

A great miniseries on the Life of Christ, directed by Franco Zeffirelli, TV Guide once called it "the best ministeries ever made"! Robert Powell plays Jesus and Olivia Hussey plays the Virgin Mary. As a Catholic I have one quibble with this movie: it depicts Mary as experiencing labor pains while birthing Jesus. The Church has always taught that, as the sinless New Eve giving birth to our Saviour, Mary did not suffer pain since labor pains result from original sin (though she suffered great pain at the foot of the Cross where she mystically "gave birth" to us and became Mother of the Church). Yet the rest of the movie is very good, so I include it here with that one caveat. If anyone does not want to buy it because of that scene, I certainly understand.
King of Kings (1961) VHS
Remake of the classic silent film by the same name; Jeffrey Hunter depicts Jesus as strong, masculine and human yet definitely divine. Catholics will find much to like in this movie; there is even a scene which alludes to Mary's intercessory role. Definitely recommended. Also available in a widescreen version.
Apparitions of the Virgin Mary

Song of Bernadette. (1943) VHS

A lovely, very spiritual film adaptation of Franz Werfel's best-selling novel on the apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes. Jennifer Jones plays St. Bernadette Soubirous, the French peasant girl to whom Our Lady appeared in 1858 (Linda Darnell plays the Virgin Mary). Beautifully directed and presented from a believing point of view. It was nominated for twelve academy awards and won four, including Cinematography, Score and Best Actress for Jennifer Jones. Highly recommended.
The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima. (1952) VHS
A beautiful film about Our Lady's apparition at Fatima in 1917, perhaps the most significant apparition of this century. Depicts the apparitions, the persecution the three shepherd children suffered from the anti-religious government in Portugal at the time, and the famous Miracle of the Sun. Too bad Hollywood doesn't make movies like this anymore! Nominated for an academy award in "Best Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture".
Lives of the Saints

A Man for All Seasons (1966) VHS (also available in DVD)

One of my all-time favorites, about the great English martyr, Saint Thomas More. A powerful film which never fails to challenge me: Would I have the strength to do as Sir Thomas did if I were in his situation? Thought-provoking dialogue as well. A "must-see".
Joan of Arc (1999) VHS (also available in DVD)
The CBS miniseries, starring LeeLee Sobieski, Jacqueline Bisset. Occasionally, Hollywood makes a good film, and this is one of them.
Family and Children's Titles

Madeline (1998) VHS

A great recent movie based on the popular Madeline children's books.
The Prince of Egypt (1998) VHS (also available in DVD)
Everything about this movie is impressive: animation, soundtrack, epic story. It takes a few liberties with the biblical story of Moses (as it warns in an opening disclaimer), but they are forgivable considering this movie's reverent treatment of faith. Highly recommended.
The Sound of Music (1965) VHS
Based on the true story of the Von Trapp family, this movie remains a classic.
Many more titles will be added in the near future (God willing!). If you don't find anything of interest here, you may search Amazon.com's extensive collection at the search engine below.
