"THEOLOGY OF THE BODY":
POPE JOHN PAUL II's RADICAL TEACHING ON HUMAN SEXUALITY

Pope John Paul II may be one of the most misunderstood, misrepresented figures in the world today. Which is not too surprising, since he is the visible head of one of the most misunderstood, misrepresented faiths in the world today!

I must admit that, before I read his encyclicals and speeches I had a completely erroneous view of the man, mainly based on what other people said about him, particularly the news media. When I started actually reading what he had to say, I was astounded. He turned out to be nothing like his detractors' portrayals of him!

One of the most surprising things about this brilliant man is his teaching on human sexuality. That is the topic of this article.

Guilt, guilt, guilt?

That's what most people think the Catholic Church's teaching about sex is. "Sex is bad, sex is dirty, don't do it even if you're married" - you've probably heard it before. If that's what you think the Church's teaching is, prepare to be surprised.

Sorry, I'm not ready yet :-).

In the meantime, I recommend that you check out the Declaration on Sex Education on the Christus Rex web site. This document contains the essence of the Pope's teaching on human sexuality.

Also, check out Expanding Our Human Sexual Horizons by Thomas W. Hilgers, MD. This book has some fine sections on sanctified sexuality.

Thank you for your patience.
